A local hiker was rescued by the Sonoma County sheriff's helicopter Thursday after he fell about 10 to 15 feet from Gunsight Rock, a popular pinnacle overlooking Sonoma Valley.
The 68-year-old Kenwood man suffered a head injury and was transferred to a medical helicopter, which flew him to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
His name was not disclosed by authorities. Further details about his condition were not immediately available.
The 11:30 a.m. rescue began after several hikers who were in the area reported the man's fall.
The crew on Henry 1, the Sheriff's Office helicopter, reached the victim via a 100-foot line and then transferred him to the REACH helicopter at a nearby landing spot.
Gunsight Rock is on the western face of Hood Mountain and is reached by trails leading through both Hood Mountain Regional Park and Sugarloaf Ridge State Park.
Authorities said emergency responders on foot would have need at least 45 minutes to reach the remote location.
