Rohnert Park city manager asks council for assistant

Rohnert Park City Manager Gabe Gonzalez is asking the City Council to unfreeze and fill an assistant city manager position.

He is recommending that the city hire someone from within its ranks, which would cost it between $25,000 and $40,000.

The change, he said, will allow the city to correct "an imbalance" that prioritizes daily management tasks and prevents him from fully focusing on strategic planning and developing policy to advance the city's longterm interests.

"This structure is counter-productive to how I envision we need to be operating," he said in a proposal to the council which is to be reviewed tonight.

If no current city employees can be found to fill the position, he said, then the position would remain empty until a later date.

The position was frozen in early 2011 when the city was still confronting a steep deficit.
