Foley Family Wines purchases Sawyer Cellars

Foley Family Wines is expanding again, announcing a deal Monday to acquire a winery in the heart of Napa Valley, Sawyer Cellars.

The purchase includes 40 acres of vineyards outside Rutherford and a 20,000-gallon production facility and tasting room on Highway 29, but excludes the Sawyer brand.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

"We've been looking for a home along Highway 29 for our Foley Johnson winery. This purchase provides us with a great location for our tasting room, an excellent winemaking facility and 40 acres of superb vineyards in the heart of the Rutherford appellation," buyer Bill Foley said in a statement.

Brad Warner, the winemaker at Sawyer since 1999, will become the head winemaker for Foley Johnson.

Founded in 1996, Foley Family Wines now owns 13 wineries in California, Washington and New Zealand. Its properties include Chalk Hill and Sebastiani in Sonoma County; Merus, Kuleto, Altvs and Foley Johnson in Napa Valley; Foley Estates in Santa Rita Hills; Lincourt Vineyards in Solvang; Firestone Vineyard in Santa Ynez Valley; Eos in Paso Robles; Three Rivers Winery in Washington; and Vavasour and Clifford Bay in New Zealand.
