Letter of the Day: Drones and morality

Drones and morality

EDITOR: There is a rhetorical question missing from the justifiable outcry regarding drone strikes by the United States: How soon will it be before another world power develops the technology?

President Barack Obama just admonished Syria's leader that killing innocent civilians with chemical weapons would be "unacceptable." I've recently read that, on average, about 45 percent of the casualties from our drones are civilians, some of whom are children. I'm sure the president sees drones as a simple way to feel effective in this inane "war on terror." Gone are the days when the U.S. takes the moral high ground.

Like nuclear weaponry, this is another genie that must fit back into the bottle.
