Santa Rosa Rugby Club eyes national crown

Perfect on the season, the Santa Rosa Rugby Club seeks two more wins in Colorado this weekend for a national men's championship.

Competing in USA Rugby Men's Division II, the Santa Rosa squad faces Rocky George, Md., in one Saturday semifinal. The SD Old Aztecs and Wisconsin also meet at Infinity Park, in Glendale, Colo., with the winners playing Sunday.

Santa Rosa, now in its 42nd year of competition, annually aims to contend for the national championships.

Players, ranging in age from 18 to 40, share a passion for the physical sport.

Going 17-0 on the season that started in December, Santa Rosa captured the Northern California Rugby Football Union title, often one of the nation's strongest leagues. Santa Rosa then took the Pacific Coast Championships.

In the Sweet 16 national playoffs, Santa Rosa won two more, competing at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista.

The first contest was a close two-point win over Albuquerque. Santa Rosa then handled Omaha to earn a trip to the Final Four.
