Letter of the Day: Political arithmetic

Political arithmetic

EDITOR: My math skills are poor, but I can now predict who will win the presidential race. The Occupy folks distinguish the wealthy 1 percent versus the 99 percent. Now, Mitt Romney has identified the 47 percent "victim" class who don't pay income tax as opposed to the 53 percent who do. It is well known that some of the wealthy 1 percent actually belong to the 47 percent, given that they don't pay taxes either. So, it seems that someone can win the election by appealing to the 47 percent and the 1 percent, needing only 2 percent of the remaining 53 percent.

Unless, of course, one of the candidates gets all but 3 percent of the 53 percent.
