600 pot plants eradicated in Potter Valley

Mendocino County Sheriff's deputies have eradicated 600 marijuana plants in the Mid Mountain Road area southeast of Potter Valley, authorities said.

An investigation into the growing operation is continuing, said Sheriff's Capt. Kurt Smallcomb. He said no arrests were made Tuesday when search warrants were served at several locations.

The plants ranged from seedlings growing in a greenhouse to outdoor plants that were four feet tall, Smallcomb said.

He declined to comment further on the case.

The North Coast's outdoor pot-growing season is in its early stages. Officials from the state's Campaign against Marijuana Planting are expected to begin assisting Mendocino County authorities with large-scale eradication efforts at the end of July, he said.

Preparations for the multi-agency operation were underway this week in Ukiah, where drug enforcement officials have been holding pot-spotting training. The course teaches law enforcement officers how to recognize marijuana from the air. The data they collect will be used later in the season to eradicate plants.
