CHP officers are investigating a fatal crash reported near Fort Ross along the Sonoma Coast on Wednesday afternoon involving a man who was trapped inside an upside-down vehicle.

The single-vehicle collision was reported to authorities just before 3:30 p.m. on Highway 1 near the Fort Ross State Historic Park, the CHP’s traffic incident website said.

The vehicle, a Volkswagen Golf hatchback, was found overturned about 100 feet off Highway 1 just north of the Reef Campground, a campsite and day use area located within the Fort Ross State Historic Park, CHP spokesman Officer David deRutte said.

It was unknown how long the vehicle and the man inside had been at the crash site, deRutte said, adding the vehicle was difficult to spot from the roadway.

An officer who responded to the crash reported the vehicle’s engine had gone cold by they time they arrived, indicating the crash may have happened much earlier.
