Unlicensed driver, 19, cited for 125-mph joyride on Highway 101 near Petaluma

An unlicensed driver caught traveling 125 mph on Highway 101 near Petaluma early Thursday morning couldn't say why he was driving so fast - only that it "was stupid," authorities said.

Point Reyes resident Salvadore Barajas Miranda, 19, had a learner's permit but no license yet when he was pulled over at 1:10 a.m. on southbound Highway 101 near Old Redwood Highway, the CHP said.

His permit required him to have a licensed driver over 25 years old in the car with him. Instead, he had a passenger who not only had no license but was himself on probation for driving without a license, the CHP said.

A Petaluma police officer on DUI patrol was parked at the Pepper Road on-ramp when he saw the speeding 2002 BMW go by, police said. He used radar to confirm Miranda's speed, police said.

Miranda was cited for suspicion of driving above 100 mph and driving without a license, police said.
