Father, daughter beaten in fight at Santa Rosa park

A chaotic, gang-related fight erupted Saturday night following a car show in a northwest Santa Rosa park.

A 40-year-old man was beaten badly enough to lose consciousness during an assault by several people who Santa Rosa police believe to be members of a local street gang.

Police arrested Carl William Hastie, 27, of Marin County in connection with the fight.

Police said the fight broke out during a car show at Youth Community Park on Fulton Road.

But an organizer of the Santa Rosa Style Low Rider Club, who asked to be anonymous, disputed that. He said the fight happened in a different section of the park well after the show finished at 5 p.m. and did not involve anyone associated with the club.

Police responded to a report of trouble at the park shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday.

A group of suspected gang members started an argument with the victim, and when his 18-year-old daughter tried to intervene, she was punched in the face by a suspect, police said.

When the father tried to stop the assault, he was "knocked to the ground where he was repeatedly punched and kicked by several subjects," according to a police statement.

That triggered a larger fight in which three more family members were assaulted by several people wearing clothing indicative of gang participation and who yelled gang challenges at the victim, police said.

The father and daughter received significant facial injuries and were treated at and released from a hospital. The three other family members received minor injuries and did not require treatment.

Witnesses spotted some of the suspects leaving in a white Chevrolet pickup. Police arrested Hastie after a similar vehicle was found at an apartment complex in the 800 block of Russell Avenue.

Hastie was being held Sunday at the Sonoma County Jail on $135,000 bail. He faces several assault charges.

Police said they are seeking the other suspects and witnesses to the fight. Anyone with information can call police at 543-3670.
