New culinary attractions proposed for Healdsburg

Healdsburg soon could be adding more foodie attractions to its culinary roster.

The Planning Commission on Tuesday will consider approving construction of a new two-story commercial building where the post office stood before it burned down two years ago.

The Center Street location is proposed for a meat store, but it won't be like your father's butcher shop.

Proposed by local winemaker Pete Seghesio, Healdsburg Meat Co. will feature house made "salumi" - Italian for cured meats such as salami, prosciutto, copa and the like. Fresh steaks, raw and smoked sausage, chops and hot dogs sourced from local ranchers will also be offered.

Customers will be able to try tastings and compare the "best of the region."

Also in the same building will be a cafe deli offering paninis and pizza from a wood-fired oven.

Of course it wouldn't be Healdsburg without the wine tasting and sales by the glass that are also planned.

The project includes two other storefronts for lease and three hotel rooms on the second floor.

A few blocks away, Jackson Family Wines, makers of Kendall Jackson, is proposing a "culinary cafe" that includes wine and food tastings and pairings, as well as retail sale of food and wine.

The business at 241 Healdsburg Ave., just south of the plaza, is not just a glorified tasting room, according to proponents.

Breads, cheeses, chocolates, charcuterie will be part of the cafe menu, along with "curated artisan food" and picnic baskets.

A portion of the space will be dedicated as a "living laboratory" to showcase and educate on barrel and tank fermentation and other aspects of winemaking.

Special events including culinary demonstrations, charitable events, pop-up restaurants and winemaker dinners are also planned.

The building was formerly occupied by Shimo Modern Steakhouse. Prior to that restaurants Cena Luna and Catellis the Rex were there.

Planning staff is recommending approval of both projects.
