Man claims $13 million prize from winning Rohnert Park ticket

The winner of a $13 million SuperLotto Plus jackpot who bought his ticket in Rohnert Park almost a month ago has claimed his prize officials said Wednesday.

He was identified as Omar Estrella, 40, who purchased the ticket June 23 at the Kwick Pick Market.

State Lottery officials said Estrella on Friday went to the agency's office in San Francisco with his wife and attorney.

"He just seemed like a really nice, down-to-earth guy, quiet and really nervous about having this money," said Alex Traverso, a lottery spokesman.

Estrella decided against having a news conference or releasing any other personal details. His name is the only information required to be released, Traverso said.

He said Estrella's reaction was one of caution.

"Either they really are just dumbfounded and cannot believe it happened to them or they are through the roof and have all these plans for their money," Traverso said.

"For him, it was almost like he didn't want to get too excited; he wanted to stay grounded and think it through."

Estrella once lived in the D Section of Rohnert Park, but the residents of the home said he has moved and declined to give additional information.

In an interview with lottery officials, Estrella said he is a regular player and spent $4 on tickets at the Kwick Pick Market that day.

The market will receive $65,000 for selling the winning ticket.

Market owner Kulbir Dusanjh said Wednesday he provided the surveillance video of the man buying the ticket to lottery officials.

He said he didn't recognize Estrella on the tape as a regular customer.

Traverso said Estrella has not decided whether to take the $13 million over 26 years or in a lump sum of $9.6 million.

It was the biggest lottery win in Sonoma County in four years.

In February 2008, Elba Escamilla of Petaluma, who never had played the lottery, claimed an $80 million jackpot.

A construction worker and a respiratory therapist from Middletown won a $50 million jackpot in 2002.

The next highest amount was won in 1992 by a young Cloverdale couple who bought a ticket worth $19 million at Larkfield's Molsberry Supermarket.
