Santa Rosa man who drowned in Russian River identified

A 20-year-old Santa Rosa man who died while swimming in the Russian River was identified Wednesday as Antonio Jimenez Garcia, Sonoma County coroner's officials said.

Garcia was swimming at Sunset Beach near Forestville Tuesday when his companions said he started thrashing and disappeared under the surface, officials said.

One of Garcia's friends called 911 to report the apparent drowning at about 4:20 p.m.

Rescue divers from the Forestville Fire Department found Garcia's body about an hour later in about 10 feet of water, close to the spot where his friends saw him go under, officials said.

An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday, coroner's Sgt. Greg Stashyn said.
