Police probe 2 suspicious deaths in Sausalito (w/video)

SAUSALITO — Police in a popular San Francisco Bay Area tourist attraction are probing whether the early-morning suspicious deaths of two people inside a home are the city's first homicides in five years.

Officers discovered the bodies after responding to reports of gunfire shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday, Sausalito Police Sgt. Stacie Gregory said.

Police have released few details about the deaths in Sausalito, which is located just on the other side of the world famous Golden Gate Bridge, and would only describe it as an "isolated incident."

A next-door neighbor, Sherrie Farber, told the San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/1p8bSvZ ) Sunday that a couple live in the home where the shooting occurred. Farber said and her husband were asleep and were awaken to the sound of gunfire and called police.

Faber said the couple who live in the home hosted a party Saturday night and invited several neighbors, but she and her husband did not attend the gathering. Faber describes the neighborhood as very safe.

"It was a huge shock," she said. "There's never been anything like this here."

Sausalito Police Chief Jennifer Tejada told the Marin Independent Journal (http://bit.ly/1o0ZVsV ) Sunday that there was no sign of a break-in at the home and that the public is not at risk.

The names of the victims have not yet been released.

The newspaper reports that if murder is involved, it would be Sausalito's first since Chet Turner fatally slashed his live-in girlfriend, Avril Clary, in 2009.

Turner pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
