Two men escaped serious injuries after their truck ran off a cliff Friday night north of Bodega Bay, CHP officers said.
Christian Zapien, 24, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet pickup when it went off Highway 1 and over the cliff around 10 p.m. near Salmon Creek, CHP Sgt. Ross Ingels said. The driver and his 23-year-old passenger, whose name was not released, were taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, he said.
Zapien was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, Ingels said.
The pickup truck fell about 50 feet before it landed on Salmon Creek Beach, said Jason Downing, a firefighter with the Bodega Bay Fire Department, which responded to the accident.
“The vehicle landed on the passenger side,” Downing said. “It was pretty beat up.”
However, he added, the two men managed to get out of the truck by the time firefighters had arrived.
Earlier this week, Fort Bragg driver Jeff Aylen, 62, rolled off the same stretch of highway, down 80 feet and walked away with minor injuries. His 1999 Lexus landed on its roof, CHP officers said.
