Alpine Meadows worker dies in ski accident

RENO, Nev. — A 24-year-old employee at Alpine Meadows ski resort has died from injuries she suffered in an accident while skiing in the backcountry near Lake Tahoe.

A statement issued by the resort's overseer, Squaw Valley USA, says Annalise Kjolhede sustained injuries to her head and neck after a "serious accident" on Saturday. She was taken to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, where she died on Tuesday.

Alpine Meadows doesn't officially open until Dec. 7. But Squaw Valley spokeswoman Amelie Richmond says the resort is mostly on U.S. Forest Service land and generally open for public use.

Kjolhede was a member of Alpine Meadow's Kids Ski School. The resort says she was wearing a helmet.
