EUREKA — A Northern California man is headed to trial on charges that he killed one person and wounded another with a crossbow.
The Times-Standard of Eureka reports (http://bit.ly/1d1Aorp) that a Humboldt County Superior Court judge found on Wednesday that there was sufficient evidence for 21-year-old Phoenix Triton King to be tried on murder and attempted murder charges.
Authorities say he shot and killed 44-year-old James James and wounded 41-year-old Matthew Lewis during a confrontation on Sept. 8. King and his 16-year-old girlfriend had hitchhiked from Clear Lake to Humboldt County and were en route to Oregon.
James and Lewis were fellow transients.
According to sheriff's officials, King said James and Lewis threatened to kill him and his girlfriend. He has pleaded not guilty.
His girlfriend has also pleaded not guilty to murder and attempted murder charges.
