Highway 37 open for Sunday motorists

Caltrans opens highway a day early|

Sunday drivers got a reprieve from the traffic chaos that was caused Saturday by the closure of Highway 37 in east Sonoma County.

Initially scheduled for closure through 5 a.m. Monday, the highway was opened to traffic in both directions Sunday.

Caltrans is conducting major maintenance and repaving of the state route between Highways 121 in Sonoma County and Highway 29 near Vallejo.

The closure on Saturday dumped so much additional traffic onto alternative routes that motorists encountered significant delays, notably on Highways 121 and 12 between Sonoma and the Napa Valley.

Highway 37 will be closed against next weekend, between 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, and 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22, according to the current work schedule.

Caltrans also plans to have it closed for work overnight, between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., Monday, Sept. 29 through Friday, Oct. 3.
