A Mendocino County inmate who did not return last week after he was granted a four-hour release to visit a sick relative was captured Monday in Ukiah and returned to jail, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office.

Brett Edward Harlan, 56, was booked on suspicion of escaping jail custody and was being held on $175,000 bond, said Sheriff’s Lt. Greg Van Patten.

He was arrested on Monday evening in the 300 block of East Gobbi Street by Ukiah police.

Harlan was granted a temporary release on Sept. 16 but did not return to the jail. Harlan had been in custody on suspicion of car theft, evading a peace officer and assault on a peace officer as well as drug possession charges. He is expected to face new charges related to his alleged escape, Van Patten said.
