Halloween gets off to a cool and wet start

Getting to San Francisco a challenge as thousands gather for a parade celebrating the World Series champs Giants|

Halloween crept in cloudy and rainy Friday morning, with as much as an inch of the wet stuff expected to fall across the North Bay by tonight.

The CHP reported that a downed tree at about 8 a.m. on Highway 116 near Mirabel Rd in Forestville was blocking lanes and causing delays.

Very heavy traffic is expected this morning on interstates 80 and 280, and US-101, as people head into San Francisco for today’s parade celebrating the Giants third World Series victory in five years.

The parade starts at noon in San Francisco at Market and Steuart streets and continues west on the downtown thoroughfare.

Golden Gate Ferry expanded service Friday from Larkspur to San Francisco to accommodate the demand. Five ferries will run continuously from 7 to 11:30 a.m., leaving as soon as they are full. Expanded service also will be available for return afternoon trips from San Francisco to Larkspur.

One ferry will run on its usual weekday schedule from Sausalito. Extra staff will be on hand to handle additional passengers.

Delays were reported on BART Friday morning.

In the North Bay, rains were forecast to turn to showers and possible thunderstorms Friday afternoon. High temperatures were expected to reach the mid-60s in Santa Rosa, according to Steve Anderson, a forecaster for the U.S. National Weather Service.

He said the rain is expected to clear out Saturday morning. Sunday should be sunny, with high temperatures in the 70s.
