BERKELEY — A motorist driving at speeds of more than 100 miles mph at times led state troopers on a 53-mile chase through two San Francisco Bay Area counties.

California Highway Patrol officers eventually used a Taser Tuesday night to capture the 23-year-old driver, who finally stopped and ran away from the stolen car he was driving in Oakland.

Officers first spotted the red Dodge speeding in Berkeley and attempted to stop the car, but the driver sped up and headed into a neighboring county.

Officers called for a helicopter to help track the car as it exited and entered the freeway several times and then headed into Oakland.

A short pursuit on Oakland city streets ended with the arrest of 23-year-old Lateef Omari of Oakland on vehicle theft and recklessly evading police charges as well as past criminal warrants.
