Small earthquake jolts Santa Rosa

The North Coast received a quick and, for some, a strong jolt Sunday from a magnitude-2.8 earthquake centered below south Santa Rosa, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The 4:47 p.m. quake was centered just west of Petaluma Hill Road and just north of Kawana Springs Road. It occurred?4.7 miles below the surface.

Sunday’s quake paled in comparison to the magnitude-6.0 temblor centered near Napa that shook the region three months ago, yet came as a vivid reminder of a steady stream of research indicating the region is due for another big one.

Three miles northeast of the epicenter on Summerfield Road, Celia Talbot was jolted out of bed.

“I called friends and nobody felt it,” Talbot said. “I thought I must be nuts or my house was sinking.”

Talbot, 92, said Sunday’s shaker felt just as strong but much shorter in duration than the Aug. 24 Napa earthquake.

No damage was reported but three people called the Santa Rosa Police Department asking for confirmation that the jolt was, in fact, an earthquake, Sgt. Ron Nelson said.

The Santa Rosa fire department received no calls for service following the temblor, although some firefighters at stations downtown and near Montgomery Village felt it.

On Sunday, 236 people reported feeling the earthquake on the geological survey’s website by 9 p.m.

The majority - 201 respondents - were in Santa Rosa, but people reported feeling the quake from Windsor to Petaluma.

One person reported feeling the temblor about 65 miles southeast of the area in Brentwood in Contra Costa County.
