A pit bull that escaped through a hole in a fence Monday morning attacked a Santa Rosa woman, according to Santa Rosa police.

The woman spotted the loose dog and was attempting to put her beagle away in her home, to protect it from the larger animal, when she was attacked, Santa Rosa police Sgt. Lisa Banayat said.

The woman suffered at least one bite to an ankle and perhaps to one hand and was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

A 911 call about the attack was made at 10:20 a.m., bringing Santa Rosa firefighters, police and animal control officers to a Roseland residence on Goodman Avenue, just off of Sebastopol Road.

The dog, which apparently belonged to a neighbor, remained loose for awhile but was found and taken by a Sonoma County animal control officer, Banayat said.
