Smith: Junk-art memorial to teen crash victim unveiled in Sebastopol

The latest from renowned sculptor Patrick Amiot honors a teen who died in a Highway 12 crash and other young people who died too soon.|

Will you be out and about this holiday weekend?

If so, and especially if you’ll have kids in tow, you might want to stop by Peace Garden alongside the Sebastopol Community Cultural Center on Morris Street.

Just days ago, some of the people who loved Megan Libby dedicated there a playful and endearing archway.

Megan was 16 when she died in 2000 in a traffic crash on Highway 12. Her parents, Brian and Nancy, and some friends created in her honor, and in the others of Sebastopol-area children who died far too soon, the For Our Angels Foundation.

The foundation, which sponsors an annual benefit golf tournament and provides scholarships to local students, contributed to the creation of the garden gateway. Sebastopol’s renowned junk-art sculptor, Patrick Amiot, created the arch at a greatly reduced price.

The steel “Peace Town” arch features winged character in a swing and a plaque honoring “Megan Libby and all the children who have left us too soon.”

Enjoy it. And kiss your children.
