A driver who apparently hit a deer on River Road early Monday crashed down an embankment, sending a 31-year-old Santa Rosa woman with serious injuries to the hospital, the CHP said.

The driver was able to get out of her car, which had traveled about 20 feet down the embankment at Trenton Road. She got up to the roadway, where she flagged down a passing car, seeking help for her passenger who had been thrown through the windshield. CHP Officer Jon Sloat said the passenger was not wearing her seat belt.

A call to 911 about the crash came in at about 5:40 a.m.

An ambulance took the passenger to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, according to a Sonoma County emergency dispatcher.
