Oakland man dead in Highway 101 crash

CHP is trying to figure out how what caused a man driving a vintage Ford Pinto to crash near Cloverdale Tuesday night.|

A 51-year-old Oakland man was killed Tuesday in a Highway 101 crash south of Cloverdale, the CHP said Wednesday.

The crash was reported about 8:10 p.m. just north of the northbound Asti Road onramp, Sgt. Jon Sloat said.

A CHP officer called to investigate found the 1972 Ford Pinto wagon with a distinctive custom paint job down an embankment, about 50 feet from the road, resting on its right side.

The driver was dead inside. His name was withheld pending notification of family.

It was not known when the crash happened or what caused the man to go off the road.

Testing would determine if intoxication was a factor, Sloat said.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the CHP at 707-588-1400.
