Fire burns Hopland vineyard guest house

Officials believe the cause of a Hopland-area fire that burned a mobile home being used as a guest house may be electrical.|

A Tuesday evening fire near Hopland burned a mobile home used as a winery guest house, a Ukiah Valley Fire official said Wednesday.

Firefighters were called to the La Ribera Vineyards on Old River Road at 6:12 p.m. for a possible outbuilding fire. Arriving firefighters found flames inside a two-bedroom, single-wide mobile home, fire Capt. Peter Bushby said.

The fire apparently started in a bedroom and spread across the insulation in the ceiling, he said.

Firefighters quickly put out the flames, but it took hours to make sure a variety of hot spots were no longer a threat and they didn't leave the location until about 10 p.m. Nine firefighters responded with four pieces of apparatus.

The loss appeared to be total. Bushby estimated it at $65,000 for contents and the structure. The home was used as a guest house or short-term rental and no one was staying in it at the time.

Fire officials were attempting to determine the cause, which preliminarily appeared to be electrical, Bushby said.
