Lakeport police are looking for a suspect who stole firearms and loaded them into the pickup of a resident whose home he also burglarized.

The suspect was loading the stolen goods into the truck at about 3 p.m. in the 300 block of Sixth Street when the resident spotted him, according to the Lakeport Police Department. With a hammer in hand, the suspect fled toward Fifth Street, police said.

Officers said they found five firearms and a bag of ammunition in the pickup, but the weapons didn’t belong to the truck’s owner.

“We believe they may have been stolen from another residence in the vicinity and placed there by the suspect,” police said in a news release.

Police and Lake County sheriff’s deputies are searching for the suspect, believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s with short dark brown hair and a goatee, a thin build and about 6-feet tall. He was last seen wearing a black shirt and cut-off jean shorts, officers said.

It’s unknown whether the suspect is armed. Police urge residents who spot him not to approach him and, instead, to dial 911.
