Search suspended for missing Sonoma County boaters

An active search along a Marin County coastline for a pair of missing Sonoma County boaters remained suspended Monday.

Heavy fog was grounding an air effort, but a break in the weather sometime this week would allow for a helicopter search, said Melanie Gunn, a spokeswoman for Point Reyes National Seashore.

Sunday’s search ended at 4 p.m., after 25 people had patrolled 22 miles of coastline. From Tomales Point to Point Reyes headlands they’d looked for two men who’d been fishing Friday with two other friends.

“We did the whole shoreline and didn’t find anything, unfortunately,” Gunn said.

On Saturday, searchers found the wrecked boat and two bodies - Rick Hargreaves, 59, of Santa Rosa and Diane Kelly, 61, of Windsor.

Still missing are Windsor neighbors Ryan Viall, 28, and David Breeden, 39. Marin County authorities haven’t released the names of the still-missing boaters, but family and friends have identified them, saying they all went out Saturday for a fishing trip on Hargreaves’ 21-foot boat.

When the foursome didn’t return Saturday evening officials began a search.

Editor’s note: A previous version of this story gave inaccurate information for the date of the fishing expedition. It was Friday.
