A Petaluma bicyclist collided with a motorcycle Sunday afternoon on remote King Ridge Road, sending emergency workers converging on the winding hills above Cazadero.

The Sonoma County sheriff’s helicopter, as well as fire and ambulance agencies responded to King Ridge Road at Tin Barn Road after a caller reported the collision at about 2:20 p.m.

William Mitchell, 34, was riding his bicycle in a group along the picturesque but narrow, twisting and steeply graded route when he failed to stay to the right side of the road through a curve. He collided with a motorcycle being ridden by John Mardesich, 48, of San Rafael, according to the CHP.

Mitchell suffered major injuries and was taken by helicopter to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. Mardesich was uninjured, according to the CHP.
