OAKLAND — An Oakland policer officer was seriously injured while breaking up a large, late-night illegal sideshow of more than 100 cars.

Sideshow participants race cars, perform stunts and attract a large number of revelers.

The Oakland Police Department reported Wednesday that the unnamed officer was hit in the face by a thrown bottle and underwent emergency surgery. The department also reported that a cinderblock was thrown through the passenger window of a police cruiser. Police from three agencies responded to help breakup the event in East Oakland early Saturday morning after authorities received reports of gunfire. Police issued 22 citations and are seeking help in finding the bottle thrower.

Sideshows are popular during the summer and police said several of the illegal sideshows occurred in Oakland over the weekend.
