Black smoke rose from a small wildfire Tuesday in a remote area on Sonoma Mountain, prompting a large response from firefighters around the county.

Crews held the fire to 12 acres, despite the delay in getting to a ranch up narrow, winding Sonoma Mountain Road, about 6 miles northeast of Adobe Road on the Petaluma side of the mountain, Cal Fire Capt. Joe Fletcher said.

The first calls to 911 started just after 1 p.m. People from Santa Rosa, the Sonoma Valley and Petaluma areas all reported seeing dark smoke rising from the mountain, emergency dispatchers said.

Initial reports indicated the fire’s spread was slow. The fire was completely contained at 2:05 p.m.

Structures were nearby but none were damaged, officials said.

A total of 50 firefighters responded, including 14 engine companies, five water tenders, three air tankers, a helicopter, two bulldozers, two fire crews, and eight volunteer personnel.
