CHP officers suspect a hit-and-run driver killed a pedestrian Monday night on Highway 20 in Lake County.

The man who died remained unidentified Tuesday, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers were called at 9:40 p.m. about an injured person on the rural highway near Upper Lake, west of Saratoga Springs Road. They found an injured man lying on the side of the road who apparently had been hit by a vehicle, the CHP said.

No driver or vehicle believed to be involved was nearby.

Medical attempts were made to save the man, who succumbed to his injuries while still along the highway.

The man apparently wasn’t carrying identification, and efforts to determine his name were ongoing Tuesday.

No new information was available about the driver, a sheriff’s official said. The vehicle had been traveling east on Highway 20.

CHP officers kept the stretch of highway closed for the investigation until about 2:45 a.m. Tuesday.
