Police: Fourth of July DUI arrests up over last year in Sonoma County

The next DUI campaign by law enforcement will be in August, stretching to Labor Day.|

Law enforcement officers countywide took 36 suspected drunken drivers to jail during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, a Santa Rosa traffic sergeant said.

The drivers were arrested Friday, Saturday and Sunday and included five people taken into custody Friday night in Santa Rosa, where officers operated a DUI checkpoint.

Santa Rosa Sgt. Mike Numainville said this year’s arrest numbers were higher than last year’s, despite the 2014 Independence Day weekend enforcement being spread throughout four days. Last year’s arrests totaled 28 for suspected DUI.

The county’s 13 law enforcement agencies typically make an extra effort to catch drunken drivers during major holiday periods. The next effort will start in August for an 18-day enforcement run ending with Labor Day, Numainville said.
