A Santa Rosa gang member was sentenced to 22 years in prison Tuesday for shooting and injuring a man police said was a rival.

Edgar Rodriguez Alonzo, 26, received the punishment for the Feb. 11, 2014, shooting at Santa Rosa’s Martin Luther King Jr. Park.

Police said Alonzo, a member of the La Primera gang, fired at two men, hitting one in the back.

He was first charged with attempted murder but admitted a lesser charge of assault with a deadly weapon in a plea bargain with prosecutors.

Judge Gary Medvigy approved the agreement, citing Alonzo’s long criminal record and the “increasing dangerousness” of his offenses.
