The Sonoma County Coroner’s Office Monday released the name of the man who died last week after being hit by a dump truck on Highway 101, identifying him as Rigoberto Lopez-Barrios.

The CHP has been investigating whether the 26-year-old Santa Rosa man had deliberately stepped into traffic last Thursday afternoon in an attempt to commit suicide.

The crash happened just before 10:30 a.m. near the Bicentennial Avenue overpass. Lopez-Barrios had been walking south on the northbound Highway 101 shoulder. Witnesses told CHP officers it looked as if the man intentionally moved into the roadway.

Lopez-Barrios was in the path of a Peterbilt truck and was hit and thrown onto the shoulder.

He died on the way to a hospital.

The incident remains under investigation by the CHP.
