A new webcam is offering a rare, closeup look at a recently hatched California condor chick.

The chick, which is nesting in a coastal redwood tree at the Ventana Wildlife Society’s condor sanctuary in Big Sur, hatched in April and is expected to leave the nest to learn how to fly in October.

California condors are North America’s largest land birds and became extinct in the wild in the late 1980s. The species was reintroduced to the wild after a successful conservation and captive breading program. The nest shown on the webcam is one of 11 in California that are currently active, according to the Ventana Wildlife Society.

Another condor cam showing a cliffside nest in Hopper Mountain National Wildlife Refuge in Southern California is embedded in this post.
