Firefighters battle Sonoma house fire

Second fire breaks out in southern Santa Rosa.|

A two-alarm fire heavily damaged the garages of two adjacent homes Tuesday in the southeast corner of Sonoma, a fire official said.

No one was injured in the blaze reported at 1:35 p.m. and a quick attack by firefighters from five agencies limited the damage to the garages, Sonoma Valley Fire Battalion Chief Spencer Andreis said.

The occupants of both homes were displaced due to the loss of electrical service to the homes, he said.

Several callers to 911 reported the fire in the 500 block of Este Madera Lane, an older subdivision of single-family homes.

Andreis, who was first on the scene, said the fire appeared to have started between the two homes and spread from the garage to the attic of one dwelling.

Firefighters made a “fast, aggressive attack” that brought the blaze under control in 30 minutes, he said. “It worked out pretty well.”

A total of 27 firefighters responded from the Sonoma Valley, Schell-Vista, Glen Ellen and Kenwood fire departments, along with Cal Fire.

Damage was estimated at $40,000 to one house and $30,000 to the other.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, Andreis said.

Within minutes of the Sonoma fire starting, firefighters in Santa Rosa were called to a grass fire on Scenic Avenue near Sundland Avenue.

The fire threatened a few nearby homes but was stopped after about an acre of dried grass burned in a field.
