Driver flees after Rohnert Park chase, crash

Officers found what appeared to be stolen property inside the car, the CHP said.|

The driver of a stolen black Impala remained at large Wednesday after he raced away from CHP officers in Rohnert Park, crashed into a pole then escaped on foot, the CHP said.

The brief chase started at about 3:35 a.m. when two CHP officers in a patrol car near Golf Course Drive spotted a speeding black sedan as it crossed double yellow lines at Commerce Boulevard, CHP Officer Jon Sloat said in a news release.

The patrol car moved in behind the Impala and the driver sped off onto Millbrae Avenue ignoring a stop light, Sloat said. The officers attempted to catch the sedan but backed off of the chase due to the high speeds and heavy fog but continued to follow the car.

On Millbrae Avenue the Impala driver lost control. He ran off of the roadway at Arlington Avenue and hit a power pole. A man jumped out of the car and ran and a search by CHP officers and Sonoma County sheriff’s deputies failed to turn up the suspect.

The car had been stolen Monday in San Jose. Inside the sedan appeared to be a large amount of stolen property, Sloat said.
