At the beginning of the current school year, the Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District implemented a policy known as equal interval grading. Under new guidelines put out by the district, teachers are able to customize and adapt the philosophy to the grading scales they use in the classroom.

An article and accompanying info box on Page A1 on Oct. 22, as well as an editorial published on Page B6 on Oct. 24, featured a sample scale that was briefly used by a small number of teachers. That scale was not widely used in the district, as suggested in the article, info box and editorial. The scale shown in the info box was not authorized or recommended by district officials.

Additionally, many of the district and school officials quoted in the article were speaking about equal interval grading, in general, and not the scale in the info box.

A follow-up article published on Page A1 on Oct. 29 quoted a teacher as saying direction from the district on how to implement the new policy was lacking, a contention that district officials dispute.
