CLOVERDALE: Learn about local history, budget

Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the Cloverdale Historical Society for a series of three dinners at historical Cloverdale locations.

The first will take place June 4 at the former Preston Summer House & Lake, nestled in the hills just north of town and located above the former Preston Colony. The property is currently owned by Richard and Anne-Marie Winterhalder.

Madam Emily Preston, for whom the property is named, was both a spiritualist and a purveyor of cures for many ailments. Her notoriety and success resulted in numerous people seeking her counsel, many of whom never wanted to leave after being treated. She eventually allowed them to build homes and live on her property rent-free. The Preston community grew to include more than 100 residents, a school, railroad depot, church, general store and cemetery.

Tickets are $75 per person and available at the Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce, 126 N. Cloverdale Blvd., or by calling 894-4470. Seating is limited.

A budget workshop, open to the public, is set for 9 a.m. Tuesday in the Cloverdale Fire Protection District Training Room, 451 S. Cloverdale Blvd.

At the workshop, city staff and the City Council will go through the proposed budget in detail to ask questions and identify important policy issues that may need further discussion before the budget is adopted at the City Council meeting on June 28.

According to City Manager Paul Cayler, “In Fiscal Year 2016-2017, we are anticipating increases in employment costs, such as health insurance, cost of living adjustments, workers compensation and retirement.”

Chairperson Cindy Price reports that the Cloverdale Schools Reunion, open to anyone who ever attended school in Cloverdale, takes place June 26 at the Cloverdale Citrus Fair, 1 Citrus Fair Drive, preceded the day prior with a Golf Tournament at Healdsburg's Tayman Park Golf Course.

Sunday lunch will be catered by the World Famous Hamburger Ranch and a no-host bar will be staffed by the Cloverdale Lions Club. Reservations are $25 and need to be received by June 13. Make checks payable to Cloverdale Schools Reunion and forward them to P.O. Box 336, Cloverdale CA 95425.
