Two people were rescued after their sailboat capsized Saturday afternoon in Tomales Bay, apparently after becoming grounded on some shallow oyster beds.

“They were trying to get it unstuck. It didn’t go well,” said Dominic Pomilia, a Marin County Fire engineer and paramedic, said of the 15-foot sailboat. “The wind overturned it.”

The incident was reported around 5 p.m. as boaters in distress in the bay roughly between Nick’s Cove and Lawson’s Landing.

The man and the woman from Oakland, whose names were not released, were able to stand in the water, but experienced hypothermia after an estimated 20 minutes in the bay.

They were rescued by a passing 16-foot Klamath motorboat named “The Dirty Hooker,” according to Pomilia, and taken to Lawson’s Landing.

“They were cold and shivering. We warmed them,” Pomilia said, adding that they did not require further medical treatment.

He said the sailboat was left in the water and the National Parks Service was trying to locate it Saturday night.
