A man who suffered multiple gunshot wounds and may have also been stabbed was in stable condition at a Mendocino County hospital, emergency personnel said Sunday.

A friend or friends of the victim pulled up to the Pic & Pay Market in Boonville Saturday night with the injured man in the back of the vehicle, Anderson Valley Fire Chief Andres Avila said.

An off-duty firefighter happened to be nearby and called for an ambulance and law enforcement shortly after 8:30 p.m., Avila and Cal Fire Capt. Shepley Schroth-Cary said.

Sheriff’s deputies and emergency medics arrived promptly and almost simultaneously at the Highway 128 store, located across from the Mendocino County Fairgrounds, Avila said.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, was conscious, but it was not clear what had happened to him, he said.

“He had multiple gunshots to his body - five penetrating wounds, which might have been a combination of gunshot wounds and stab wounds,” Avila said.

The patient was transported by ambulance to Ukiah Valley Medical Center.

“It was pretty much a quick load and go to get him over the hill,” Avila said.

Mendocino County sheriff’s officials were not available late Sunday to provide further details on how the man’s injuries occurred.
