A man died after being assaulted Sunday night in the Ukiah-area community of Forks, west of Lake Mendocino, fire personnel said.

The unidentified man died around 7 p.m., shortly after Mendocino County sheriff’s deputies and Ukiah Valley firefighters were called to reports of an assault victim outside an apartment building in the 3000 block of North State Street, north of Lake Mendocino Drive.

The man had obvious traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, despite firefighters’ efforts to resuscitate him, emergency officials said. The cause of his injuries hadn’t been determined late Sunday.

Ukiah Valley Fire Capt. Skip Williams said a deputy later told him a suspect in the assault had been arrested with the use of a police dog a few blocks away on Portlock Lane.

The suspect required medical attention because of dog bites, Williams said.

Sheriff’s officials were not available to discuss additional details late Sunday.
