Golf cart blaze in Oakmont causes $25,000 damage

Officials credited smoke detectors with 'really making a difference' in the Wednesday blaze.|

A golf cart caught fire Wednesday afternoon in the garage of an Oakmont home, and the flames were quickly extinguished by Santa Rosa firefighters.

The blaze was reported at about 2:20 p.m. by a woman who was alerted by smoke detectors in her house in the Mesa Oaks Lane cul de sac, Santa Rosa Battalion Chief Matt Dahl said. The woman discovered smoke in her kitchen, opened a door to the garage and found the fire, he said.

An engine from Fire Station 7 in Oakmont arrived in three minutes and attacked the flames, preventing them from spreading into the house, Dahl said. The fire was under control in 15 minutes, but there was some smoke damage inside the home, he said.

Santa Rosa sent three engines and a ladder truck, with support from one Kenwood fire engine.

Damage to the golf cart and garage was estimated at $25,000.

Dahl said smoke detectors “really made a difference” in the incident. “It’s nice when they work,” he said.
