A man who served as a television motorcycle pilot for the Amgen Tour of California died Wednesday after suffering a heart attack on Highway 1 in Monterey County, according to published reports.

Tour organizers identified the man as 51-year-old Robert Llewelyn, a 20-year veteran driver "who was passionate about the sport."

California Highway Patrol officers responded to the medical emergency around 11:45 a.m. after a caller reported someone had lost consciousness and fell down.

Tour of California officials issued a statement Wednesday saying, "Today the sport of cycling, NBC and TV Motos International and Amgen Tour of California lost a friend when television moto pilot Rob Llewelyn suffered a fatal heart attack while standing on the side of the road waiting for cyclists to approach his position."

Last year's Tour winner Peter Sagan won Stage 4, which took riders from Morro Bay to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey County.

A moment of silence was held for Llewelyn before Thursday's stage 5, which starts in Lodi and ends in South Lake Tahoe.
