An Elk Grove couple on a motorcycle were injured Monday after the bike crashed down a Highway 1 embankment near Salt Point State Park on the Sonoma Coast, CHP and fire officials said.

A passerby flagged down a Sonoma County sheriff’s deputy at 11:19 a.m. Monday near a sharp curve known locally as Woody’s Corner, said Nichole Lynn a Timber Cove Fire training officer. The area is just north of Kruse Ranch Road and Fisk Mill Cove.

The riders Tuesday were identified by the CHP as John and Donna Azevado.

John Azevado was driving when he lost control on the curve, drifted out of the lane and hit a berm, then went over the side. The couple and the 2014 Harley Davidson fell about 30 feet down the steep embankment of grassy and brambly terrain.

The woman had made it back up to the road when Timber Cove firefighters arrived, Lynn said.

Firefighters used a rope system to climb down to the man and then carried him on a stretcher to higher ground. The process took about 40 minutes.

John Azevado, 54, had a broken arm and facial injuries, was flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital by Reach medical helicopter. He was treated and released. Donna Azevado, 50, suffered blunt force trauma to her chest. She was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital where she remained Tuesday in fair condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
