Rohnert Park police said they evacuated several apartments Saturday after coming across two pipe bombs during a probation check.

Officers were assisting Sonoma County Probation Department when they found a pipe bomb inside a backpack in an apartment just after 5 p.m., Rohnert Park Public Safety Department Sgt. Eric Matzen said. Authorities evacuated the unit and three adjoining apartments in the 54-unit complex near a church and an elementary school in the 7300 block of Boris Court.

They discovered a second pipe bomb in another backpack when the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad was called in to dispose of the devices, Matzen said.

The bomb squad was able to safely remove both devices, he said.

No one was injured.

Michael Digesti, who was on probation, was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance and possession of ammunition and destructive devices.

The 33-year-old man admitted to making the pipe bombs, but it’s unknown what he planned to use them for, Matzen said.
