Lake County fire burns 215 acres, third area fire in one day

Fires Sunday into Monday in Sonoma, Lake and Yolo counties have burned more than 500 acres, according to Cal Fire.|

A 215-acre grass fire burned Monday in east Lake County, the third wildland fire in the region in less than 24 hours.

No buildings burned in the three fires and no communities were threatened, according to Cal Fire, but more than 500 acres were burned. All three remain under investigation.

Monday’s fire was northwest of Indian Valley Reservoir, off Highway 20 and was blackening grass and oak woodland, Cal Fire Capt. Emily Smith said. By 5:30 p.m. Monday, it was 35 percent contained with more than 350 firefighters from multiple counties on the effort, Smith said.

Sunday, a fire started near Cache Creek in Rumsey Canyon on the edge of Yolo and Lake counties. It was contained to 277 acres by Monday morning.

Fire sparked in northeast Sonoma County Sunday night in The Geysers region near the Lake County border. Firefighters stopped it at 14 acres.

Historically, fires along The Geysers range have spread substantially, fueled by high temperatures and strong winds. Sunday night it was warm, but no wind.

“We were very fortunate with the weather. I’ve never been to The Geysers with zero wind,” said Cloverdale fire Battalion Chief Rick Blackmon.

Cloverdale, Geyserville, Healdsburg, Cal Fire, Windsor, Dry Creek Rancheria and South Lake fire agencies responded to The Geysers fire.
