PG&E cut power to approximately 22,000 residences in Santa Rosa on Wednesday evening while police attempted to remove a man who climbed to the top of an electrical tower, police said.

At about 8:45 p.m., police asked people to stay clear of the tower near Pierson Street and Santa Rosa Creek west of Highway 101. A police negotiator convinced the man to come down from the tower and he was taken into custody, police said in an update posted at 9:30 p.m.

Power was restored at 9:26 p.m., said J.B. Guidi, a PG&E representative. The utility had de-energized two lines, which affected 22,028 customers, at 8:50 p.m.

The man may have climbed the tower in some form of protest, police said. Further details were not immediately available.
